Is Your Juicer Stripping Your Juice of Nutrients?
A lot of us enjoy drinking fruit or vegetable juices especially during summer. Because of this, a lot of stores or stands are being set up in the streets that offer variety of juices to drink. But not all of these stores or stands offer the same nutritious and fresh juice. There are already available powder or syrup to instantly get the flavor of the fruit that we want which could cost them half of the expenses of buying fresh fruits to juice. If you are into juices and would want to enjoy it while staying healthy, why not find a juicer and do the juicing yourself?
Instead of spending your money buying juice from the stores, try to buy your own juicer and pick on your favorite fruits or vegetables to juice. This can at least guarantee you that what you are drinking surely has the vitamins from the fruit or vegetables. But how do you get the right juicer?
Here are some things you could consider prior to buying your new juicer:
1. Choosing the best juicer is choosing which is appropriate for your needs. This would depend on what do you intend to juice. Some would want citrus fruit juices; some like vegetables while others want it both. So think first on what would you be juicing prior to buying a juicer.
2. How much are you willing to pay for a juicer. The price of juicer varies widely. But always keep in mind that not all expensive juicers are would be best for you.
Aside from these considerations, it is also important to know the basic types of juicers for you to be able to choose which would fit you best.
1. Centrifugal juicers
2. Masticating juicers
3. Triturating juicers
4. Cold press juicers
A centrifugal juicer uses blades and strainer to separate the juice and the pulp. This type of juicer cannot be used for wheatgrass since it cannot break the fibers of the grass unlike using the other type of juicers. This is also the most common juicer used. However, the use of this type of juicer is said to take off more nutrients from the fruit or vegetables. The process of how a centrifugal juicer results in oxidation. Factors such as static electricity, heat as well as the oxidation, destroys the nutrients from the juice.
Masticating juicers, from the word masticate, this type of juicers chew the fruit or vegetables prior to extracting or squeezing the juice from it.
If the masticating juicer chews the fruit or vegetables first, a triturating juicer crushes and grinds them finely prior to pressing. This type of juicer is also known as a twin-gear juicer.
Similar to triturating juicer, a cold press juicer also crushes the fruit or vegetable before pressing them. Pulps are separated and juices are filtered. Difference is that a triturating juicer works with a twin-gear while a cold press juicer is only single geared.
On a general note, juicers do not necessarily take off all those nutrients from what you are juicing. Most experts would say that it is more nutritious to drink juices rather than eating the fruit or vegetables in their raw form.
Explanation to this is that vitamins from juices are more concentrated and can be easily absorbed by the body. There are some vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals from the fruit or vegetables that are not released when being digested; this however is extracted when you juice them. In this regard, we get more benefits in juicing rather than eating fruits and vegetables on a normal way.
